Director
Chicago Campus

Mrs. Kathy Severson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Secondary Education and French from Indiana University as well as an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Administration from National-Louis University.  Mrs. Severson’s undergraduate studies included an in-depth practicum and teaching experiences with multi-cultural and urban students, and a year-long study abroad program in Strasbourg, France, earning her a certificate of Deuxieme degree.  Additionally, she has Language Arts and French endorsements for grades 5-8 and is a certified Kindermusik instructor.

Mrs. Severson’s desire to be a life-long leaner began in her early years.  As an over-zealous kindergartener, she entered her first day of school with eagerness yet exited with tears.  When her mother asked what had happened, Kathy answered, “I didn’t learn to read!”  She eventually did learn to read and continues to be fascinated by how children learn, develop, and grow, both academically and spiritually.  Her desire is to help students understand how God made them unique, and how they can use this knowledge to glorify Him.

Mrs. Severson began her teaching career as a 7th & 8th grade French and English teacher on Chicago’s North Shore.  Later, while a stay-at-home mom, she operated an in-home daycare and began to feel God’s calling to return to teaching in the field of early childhood. She began her relationship with Christian Heritage Academy in 1999 as a parent of a preschooler.   Both of her children currently attend CHA’s Middle School.  Kathy has served as lead preschool teacher at CHA and most recently as the Director of Early Childhood programs at the Northfield and Arlington Heights campuses.

Mrs. Melissa Auer holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Ohio Northern University and an M.Ed in Elementary Reading and Literacy from Walden University. She has extensive experience working with children in an urban setting including children with specific learning needs, both in the areas of enrichment education and special education inclusion. She also has in-depth experience in integrating technology into classroom instruction.

As a Kindergartener, Mrs. Auer was impacted by her first teacher in a life-changing way. She grew to become not only an excellent student, but an outstanding teacher who desires to impact her students in similar way. Her goal is to meet student’s core emotional and spiritual needs, while utilizing hands-on, inquiry-based, multiple learning modalities to promote students’ learning and success. As a mom of a 1 year old, she is delighted to watch as her son begins the process of exploring the world and soaking in all God has to teach him.

After beginning her career by teaching preschool in Ohio, Mrs. Auer has taught for the past 6 years in Chicago as a Kindergarten teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and as a first grade teacher at the Hope Institute Learning Academy. ~
